Growling Tiger ca 1940

A glazed terracotta of a growling tiger. A fine quality model by Thierry Van Ryswyck (1911-1958). As of 1935, Thierry Van Ryswyck became very interested in ceramics and the glazes that could be applied on terracotta. He could regularly be found in the town of Vallauris, famous for terracotta, in the south of France (where he died in a car accident in 1958). Here the glaze is brown with lighter undertones and green highlights.
